The lovely city in the middle of the attractive forest landscape near the rivers Saale and Schwarza. Famous people like Schiller, Goethe, Humboldt and Schopenhauer dwelled in the city and the beautiful environment. "Rudolfestat" belonged to the gifts of Karl the Great to the monastery Hersfeld around the year 775. In the year 1334 merged city and castles to the properties of the Earl of Schwarzburg. He chose Rudolstadt as his capitol in the year 1517.

Therefore the spiritual and cultural life in the city began to prosper. Skilled builder came to Rudolstadt and rebuilt the fire damaged Heidecksburg. The chapel of Rudolstadt and the around 1792/93 founded theatre attracted alot famous artists. Today the city counts 32000 inhabitants. The residential areas spread from districts Schwarza, Schaala and Volkstedt far to Saale valley eastwards. The museum located in the Heidecksburg with its plentiful inventory and the pompous halls of the 18th century invite you to a visit. Beside that, Rudolstadt is a great start for travels and hikes to the Thuringian Forest and Franken Forest or city tours to Weimar, Jena, Arnstadt, Erfurt, Saalfeld and lots others.
